How to Clean, Oil and Store Your 3 Piece Haircutting Kit - 6CR After a Shift

Wrap up your shift with a simple routine for the cutting shear and 32T thinner in your 3 Piece Haircutting Kit - 6CR: wipe them down, oil the pivot, watch tension, and store them in the wallet.

What your kit includes and what this routine covers

Your 3 Piece Haircutting Kit - 6CR includes one cutting shear (offered in 5.75, 6.5 or 7 inches), one 32T thinning shear, one hand/feather razor and a shear wallet. This routine is for the two shears and for putting them away in the wallet. Razor care is outside its scope.

Wipe your shears, then oil the pivot

Hair, product, moisture and disinfectant residue can collect around the blades and the pivot. That is why wiping your shear clean after use sits on the daily care checklist. Once your last client has left, work through these steps on your cutting shear and your thinner:

  • Wipe the shear down, including the blades.
  • Put a small amount of oil at the pivot.
  • Open and close the shear so the oil works its way through the pivot.

Regular pivot oiling is recommended for shears you work with every day, especially after you clean or disinfect them.

Check tension when your shear starts to feel different

A change in feel is a good reason to check tension. You might notice the shear pulling or grabbing hair near the tip, your hand working harder to close it, or cutting that has become inconsistent.

  • Clear loose hair and product from the pivot, then oil it. An oiled pivot makes your tension check more accurate, so judge the final feel after oiling.
  • Open the shear, raise one handle and let it close naturally. It should neither slam shut nor stay wide open.
  • If it needs adjusting, make small adjustments and retest before you cut hair.

Stop adjusting if the screw, the ride line or the blade feels damaged. If adjusting does not stop the shear from folding, pushing, pulling or cutting roughly, send it for service.

Put your shears away in the wallet

Keep your shears in a case, wallet or protected holder so the blades and tips never touch other tools. Your kit's shear wallet is made for this job. Avoid tossing shears loose into a drawer or bag, because a small nick from a drawer, a counter or a drop can change how a shear cuts.

Keep your hair shears for hair only. Paper, tags, thread, packaging and fabric can dull or damage the edge quickly.

Your closing routine at a glance

At the end of your shift, wipe each shear down, oil the pivot and open and close the shear, check tension if the feel has changed, and slide both shears into the wallet. If you would like to see the kit itself, you can view the 3 Piece Haircutting Kit - 6CR on its product page.
