Close Out Your Shift: Wipe, Oil, Check, and Store Your 6CR 6.0 Cutting Shear
Learn how you can wipe, oil the pivot, notice tension changes, and store your 6CR 6.0 Professional Cutting Shear at the end of a shift, plus when it is time to send it for service.

Wipe the blades and oil the pivot when you finish
Your 6CR 6.0 Professional Cutting Shear is a 6-inch straight cutting shear, and it should be cleaned and oiled after you use it.
Over a working day, hair, styling product, moisture and disinfectant residue can collect around the blades and the pivot. Wiping the blades clean when you are done protects the finish and helps the blades move smoothly.
- Wipe both blades clean.
- Put a small amount of oil at the pivot.
- Open and close the shear so the oil works through the pivot.
Oil at the pivot reduces unnecessary friction and makes it more accurate when you check tension. Shears that you work with every day benefit from regular pivot oiling, especially after you clean or disinfect them.
Notice how your shear feels before you put it away
A tension problem usually shows up as a change in feel rather than in how the shear looks. If your cuts become inconsistent, the tips start pulling or grabbing, or your hand works harder to close the shear, those signs can prompt you to check tension.
Before you judge tension, clear loose hair and product from the pivot and add a small amount of shear oil. Then open the shear, raise one handle and let it close naturally. It should neither slam shut nor stay wide open.
If you decide to adjust, make small changes and test the result before you cut hair. Oil the pivot before you judge the final feel, and try the shear on clean hair or a test fiber before it goes near a client.
Know when to stop adjusting and send it for service
- Stop if the screw, the ride line or the blade feels damaged.
- Stop if the shear feels rough or forced.
- Do not keep tightening until it cuts, because too much tension causes drag and hand fatigue.
- Send the shear for service if adjusting the tension does not stop folding, pushing, pulling or rough cutting.
Store it protected and keep it on hair
Put your shear in a case, wallet or protected holder so the blades and tips do not touch your other tools. Avoid tossing it loose into a drawer or bag.
Reserve your hair shear for hair. Paper, tags, thread, packaging and fabric can dull or damage the edge.
When you are ready to look at the shear itself, view the 6CR 6.0 Professional Cutting Shear on its product page.
